Any serious damage to the bones, joints, and/or soft tissue induced by an external source is referred to as orthopaedic trauma. These injuries are often, but not always, the consequence of a sudden event, such as a vehicle accident or a fall. Trauma may also be produced by overuse; for example, tibial stress fractures, which are minute hairline cracks in the lower leg, are prevalent.
The term “orthopaedic trauma” is broad since it covers a wide range of injuries, from minor fractures to life-threatening car accidents. While there are many distinct forms of traumatic orthopaedic injuries, surgeons who specialize in this field all have the same aim in mind: to restore function to the damaged body part(s) as fast and successfully as possible.
